Oman and Botswana Collaborate on 500 MW Solar Power Plant: What This Means for Renewable Energy Investors and Entrepreneurs
Maun, Botswana – On Thursday, Maun hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for a 500 MW photovoltaic solar power plant integrated with battery energy storage of equivalent capacity. This project is part of the ongoing investment cooperation between Oman and Botswana.
The initiative follows the recent meeting between His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko, held last Monday at Al Barakah Palace. It reflects the commitment to promptly implementing investment agreements signed between the two nations. Notably, the ceremony took place just three days after the agreements were finalized in Muscat, underscoring the swift execution and strong dedication to activating the bilateral partnership.
The event was attended by President Duma Gideon Boko, Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, Chairman of Oman Investment Authority (OIA), and officials from both countries. The project is being undertaken by O-Green, a subsidiary of Oman Investment Authority, in collaboration with Botswana Power Corporation (BPC). It aligns with O-Green’s strategic goal of expanding globally through integrated renewable energy developments involving generation, storage, and supporting infrastructure, reinforcing its international position in clean energy.
This solar power plant represents the first project implemented under Oman-Botswana energy cooperation, which aims to develop projects with a combined capacity of up to 3,000 MW. This milestone signifies the transition from planning to tangible progress in their partnership.
Mustafa bin Mohammed Al Hinai, CEO of O-Green, said the groundbreaking highlights the company’s commitment to executing projects to the highest standards, consistent with signed agreements. He explained that the project will be rolled out in carefully planned phases to support Botswana’s energy grid. Al Hinai emphasized that the plant will lay the foundation for an integrated energy platform, aiding Botswana’s ambition to become a regional energy trading hub and unlocking new opportunities for sustainable economic growth through renewable energy and continuous storage solutions. Upon completion, the facility is expected to more than double Botswana’s current power generation capacity.
Moreover, the battery energy storage systems will enhance grid reliability and support peak load management, ensuring a steady supply of clean, sustainable energy. The agreements signed in Muscat encompass multiple sectors, including mineral exploration, oil product storage development, and renewable energy. They also feature a memorandum between OQ Group and Botswana Oil Ltd to explore collaboration in fuel security and infrastructure, an agreement between O-Green and BPC for the solar project, and a cooperation pact between Oman Mining Development Company and Botswana’s Exploration Investment Company focusing on mining exploration.
