Intellectual Property: A Key Driver for Sustainable Growth in Oman’s Sports Economy
MUSCAT, APRIL 27 – The Sultanate of Oman, through the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, commemorated World Intellectual Property Day 2026 under the theme “Intellectual Property and Sport: Prepare, Launch, Innovate.” The event emphasized the pivotal role of intellectual property (IP) in fostering innovation within the sports sector and advancing it as a sustainable economic industry.
The celebrations included presentations and specialized workshops detailing intellectual property concepts alongside Oman’s strategic approach to sports, highlighting the sector’s alignment with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
Nasra bint Sultan al Habsi, Director General of Commerce, stated that the chosen theme reflects the increasing significance of IP rights as a foundation for developing sports into an integrated and investment-driven industry. She underscored that this approach supports Oman Vision 2040’s aims to boost the efficiency of sports institutions and enhance their contribution to a sustainable economic framework. Al Habsi also stressed the imperative of safeguarding trademarks and innovation rights to promote long-term sector growth.
Eng Khalid bin Hamoud al Hinai, Director of the National Intellectual Property Office, noted the event’s focus on raising IP awareness and explained the decision to center the theme on sports due to the strong connection between intellectual property and the sector’s economic potential in creating a sustainable industry.
A panel discussion featured Khalifa bin Saif al Issai, Advisor to the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, who described the sports sector as one of Oman’s most promising areas for future development. He emphasized that intellectual property is crucial in evolving the sector into a national system that attracts investment and preserves national identity.
Al Issai also announced plans for collaboration between the National Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth to enhance public awareness of IP rights and their benefits for the sports sector.
Citing a recent international study, Al Issai revealed that the sports sector currently accounts for 0.9% of Oman’s GDP, which is below the regional average of 1.5% and global levels exceeding 2%. The sector contributes just 0.5% of overall employment across public, private, and non-profit organizations.
The study identified multiple opportunities for growth, including attracting international sports organizations to establish regional headquarters in Oman, increasing the number of local and global sporting events, expanding sports tourism, developing the e-sports market, and leveraging existing infrastructure through sponsorships and partnerships.
These insights highlight the urgent need to transform sports from a purely recreational activity into a sustainable economic sector by diversifying revenue streams, attracting investment, and reinforcing Oman’s national sporting identity.
Intellectual property is critical to this transformation, as it protects trademarks and national symbols, boosts economic returns, regulates broadcasting rights, and fosters innovation throughout the sports ecosystem. IP further ensures the protection of the rights of players and technical staff, combats counterfeit products and commercial fraud, and contributes to establishing a professional and investment-friendly sports environment.
The occasion also featured the work of photographer Khamis bin Ali al Maharbi, whose extensive portfolio showcases Oman’s natural and cultural heritage, underlining the importance of intellectual property in protecting and valuing creative expression.
