Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has seen a significant reduction in traffic accidents in 2025, with a total of 1,545 reported incidents, representing a 17% decrease from the previous year, as revealed by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
This decline reflects ongoing initiatives by authorities to enhance road safety through stricter enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and infrastructure improvements aimed at minimizing accidents and saving lives.
Road safety remains a critical national priority as Oman continues to invest in safer highways, smart traffic management systems, and campaigns addressing speeding, distracted driving, and seatbelt usage.
According to NCSI, Muscat experienced the highest number of traffic incidents in 2025, totaling 271 cases. South Al Batinah followed with 246 accidents, Al Dakhiliyah recorded 240, and Dhofar had 237 incidents. Musandam reported the lowest number at 26, while Al Dhahirah logged 70 accidents.
Vehicle collisions continue to be the primary cause of accidents, with 661 incidents attributed to this category. Other notable causes included pedestrian run-overs with 320 cases, falls at 312, and collisions with fixed objects accounting for 252 incidents.
The statistics also revealed that 354 Omanis lost their lives in traffic-related fatalities, including 67 women. In addition, 241 expatriates died, with 31 women among them.
Furthermore, there has been a notable decrease in speeding-related incidents, which fell from 1,009 cases in 2023 to 768 in 2024, and further down to 674 in 2025.
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has reiterated the importance of responsible driving behavior, especially during peak travel periods and holidays when traffic volumes increase significantly.
This positive trend in the reduction of accidents coincides with enhanced collaboration among government agencies to improve traffic monitoring and emergency response systems, as well as initiatives encouraging families to practice safer road habits.
