Turning Promises into Lifelines: How Child Welfare Initiatives Can Impact Social Responsibility and Business Sustainability in Oman
Children today face a world marked by profound uncertainty. Conflicts, displacement, climate crises, economic hardships, and the breakdown of essential services are severely impacting millions of children and families worldwide.
In 2026, UNICEF, the United Nations agency dedicated to children, is urgently seeking $7.66 billion from global supporters. This funding aims to support its humanitarian efforts to assist 73 million children living through crises in 133 countries and territories.
Behind these statistics are real children whose lives have been disrupted by forces beyond their control — children forced from their homes, without access to safe water, deprived of education due to school closures, or enduring hunger and loss.
Although these challenges are global, the responsibility to respond is collective.
Over past decades, global progress for children has been possible when people and institutions unite with a shared commitment. Today, more children survive, learn, and are protected because governments, communities, businesses, philanthropists, and individuals have chosen to take concerted action together.
No single organization, government, or donor can confront the scale of today’s challenges alone. Transformative partnerships are essential, not optional, for creating lasting change.
The nature of partnership is evolving. Around the world, businesses and philanthropists increasingly seek to go beyond traditional donations towards deeper, more strategic involvement. They aim to understand problems, contribute to meaningful solutions, and track measurable outcomes. Some provide resources; others bring innovation, influence, networks, expertise, or capacity to convene stakeholders. Every role is vital.
This approach is especially critical when it comes to children. Investing in children is one of the most powerful investments a society can make.
A child’s health, nutrition, education, protection, and early development shape not only their future but also the future of families, communities, and entire nations. When children are enabled to survive, heal, learn, and grow, the benefits resonate across generations.
During a recent visit to Oman, what stood out was how deeply these values of generosity, responsibility, and care for others are embedded in the culture.
For nearly 55 years, UNICEF and the Sultanate of Oman have partnered to uphold children’s rights and wellbeing. This collaboration has coincided with Oman’s impressive progress in health, education, social protection, and child welfare, reflecting cherished societal values such as generosity, responsibility, solidarity, and care.
Oman’s long-term commitment to children, led by its government, exemplifies the kind of vision UNICEF supports worldwide.
These values are central to UNICEF Oman’s “Wa’ad” (Promise) Campaign, conducted with local partners. In Omani culture, a promise carries profound meaning — it is sincere, and not given lightly. It symbolizes trust, responsibility, and a commitment to keep one’s word.
With UNICEF, this promise extends far beyond local boundaries to become a lifeline for children in greatest need.
A promise to UNICEF is more than symbolic. It translates into tangible support such as safe water, therapeutic food, shelter, clothing, educational supplies, hygiene kits, protection services, and cash assistance for children and families facing hunger, displacement, and loss.
What might seem like a simple promise takes on immense value for a child in crisis. It becomes a beacon of hope and a reminder that they are not forgotten.
For those who make this promise, the accompanying Promise bracelet serves as a quiet symbol of the impact they can have—a testament to compassion turned into action.
Through UNICEF Oman’s Promise Campaign, this individual commitment joins a larger movement, transforming sincerity into support and support into hope for every child. To learn more, visit the UNICEF Oman website and Instagram page.
By keeping our promises to children, we protect not only their present but their potential.
