Oman's RO 150 Million Sugar Refinery Opens in Sohar
The Oman Sugar Refinery at Sohar Port and Freezone opened in December 2025 after trial operations, with a designed output of one million tonnes of refined sugar a year.

The Oman Sugar Refinery at Sohar Port and Freezone was inaugurated in mid-December 2025. The ministry's notice dates the opening to 16 December, while earlier previews named Monday 15 December. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Finance Minister Sultan bin Salim Al Habsi.
The project cost more than RO 150 million and sits on a 20-hectare site inside the port. At full capacity it is designed to produce one million tonnes of refined sugar a year, about 3,000 tonnes a day. The site has storage for 500,000 tonnes of raw sugar and 70,000 tonnes of refined sugar.
Raw sugar is the input. The first shipment, about 90,000 tonnes from Brazil, arrived in August 2025. The refinery completed trial operation and met European Category 2 standards. Commercial production was due to start in phases from January 2026.
The German firm BMA handled the engineering and had engineers on site for commissioning. The refinery is mainly funded by the Omani investor Nasser bin Ali Al Hosni.
Reports described it as the first facility of its kind in Oman. Officials presented it as a step toward food security and lower reliance on imports. For investors looking at the port area, see our free zones guide.
